Vernon Smith, Jr., 78, of West Columbia, SC, and formerly of 111 Burns Street, Lyman, SC, passed away Thursday, January 30, 2020. A native of Spartanburg County, SC, he was the widower of Joyce Dantzler Smith and son of the late Vernon Smith, Sr. and Della Elizabeth Cohen Smith. Vernon was a life-long member of New Trinity Baptist Church where he served as an Usher and sang with the NTBC All Male Choir for over fifty years. Also, he was a member of the Gospel Messengers and Gent Johnson and the Gospel Melodyaires. Vernon was a graduate of Florence Chapel High School and worked for GE of Greenville for twenty-five years. In addition to wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Leroy Smith. Vernon is survived by two sons, Tony Smith of Mauldin, SC and Michael C. (Pamela) Dantzler of the home; one daughter, Tammy Steadman-Bates of Spartanburg, SC; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three brothers, Richard (Iola) Smith of Spartanburg, SC. Bobby L. (Betty) Smith of Spartanburg, SC, and Donald (Angie) Smith of Simpsonville, SC; one sister, Elizabeth Wakefield of Lyman, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family will receive friends at 111 Burns Street, Lyman, SC. Arrangements are with Community Mortuary of 102 Marion Avenue, Spartanburg, SC.
