Minister Mary Emma Glenn Smith, beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and faithful servant of the Lord, departed this life on June 22, 2025, surrounded by love and peace after a courageous five-year journey with cancer.
She was born in Spartanburg, SC, on June 28, 1949, to the late Heyward Glenn, Sr. and Francis Jeter Glenn. Mary was a proud graduate of Lincoln High School, Class of 1967. She was a long-term employee at Piedmont Dielectrics in Woodruff, SC, where she served for 26 years with grace and diligence.
In 1990, Mary answered the sacred call to the ministry. For over 19 years, she served faithfully as Youth Minister at First Baptist Church of Fairforest, touching countless lives with her spirit of humility, wisdom, and love. Known lovingly as “Minister Smith,” she had a profound impact on the youth of the church and the entire congregation. Her smile could brighten the darkest day, and her words could calm any storm.
“Minister Smith” was a humble soul with unbelievable strength, which she credited to God and her faith. She was always an encouraging voice to the youth in the church and to anyone else she encountered. She had the gift of making you feel better just by seeing her smile — and a look that could make you fall in line. She was truly special. Though life brought her many trials, most would never know what she endured. She carried her burdens with dignity, often hiding her own pain to lift the spirits of others. Her life was a living testimony of grace under pressure and joy in service.
She leaves behind her devoted husband of 33 years, Vaughn G. Smith; two loving daughters, Angela G. Walker (Spartanburg, SC) and Beverly L. Glenn (Boiling Springs, SC); two cherished granddaughters, Demetra Teele (Michael) of Las Vegas, NV, and Amber Irby of Boiling Springs, SC, and two beloved great-grandchildren, Leilani and Grayson Teele.
She is also survived by three close siblings: Clifford Jeter (Doris) of Centreville, VA; Shirley Glenn of Spartanburg, SC; and Valerie Glenn Massey (William) of Boiling Springs, SC. She was preceded in death by her beloved brother, Heyward V. Glenn, Jr., whose memory she held dear.
Though her bonds were strongest with her immediate family, Mary also extended kindness to her husband’s children: Chrystina Gilgeous (Brian) of Silver Springs, MD; Valerie Mohammed (Ric) of Richlands, NC; and Tony Lee Gary and John John Aaron, both of Houston, TX. She held space in her heart for those important to Vaughn. She also shared a warm friendship and sisterly bond with her sister-in-law and dear friend, Valerie Hamilton (Thomas) of Marietta, GA.
Her family and extended family, along with a host of dear friends and church members, were all considered blessed to know her. Though we grieve for her passing, we rejoice in knowing that her soul is at rest, and her legacy lives on in each life she touched. Mary’s memory will forever remain in our hearts — her unwavering faith, kind spirit, and commanding presence a constant reminder of God’s love. Yes, we grieve the loss of this precious soul, but we will forever celebrate her place in our hearts, until we meet again.
