Lillar Worthy Obituary

Mrs. Lillar Mae Boyd Worthy passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home at 208 Williams St.; Union, SC on Thursday, April 16, 2020.  She was the wife of the late John W. Worthy.  She was born December 22, 1921 in Whitmire, SC, the second child of ten children born to the late Charley Boyd and Fannie Mae Titus Boyd.  Passing at the age of 98, she was the last member of her generation. Being the oldest girl in her family, she helped to rear her brothers and sisters after the death of her parents.  Lillar Mae confessed Christ at an early age and was united with the Seek Well Baptist Church in Newberry County SC. Following her husband’s lead, she became a member of Clinton Chapel AME Zion Church.  She later became a very active member of New Horizon United Christian Church where she was affectionately known as “The Mother of the Church” and a Deaconess.  She attended the public schools of Union County SC.  Daily she read her Bible, inspirational booklets, the newspapers, and watched the evening news to stay abreast of what was happening in her community, the state, and the world.  “Mrs. Lillar Mae” is known for her cooking and baking skills: biscuits, chicken, pot pies and cakes.  Her most requested cake was her moist superb lemon pound cake, and cowboy cookies which she sold at Worthy’s Barber Shop.  She was an excellent seamstress, made her clothes and daughters’ clothes. She also taught her daughters how to sew.  She truly had a “green thumb”; she would break off any plant, stick it in the ground and it would root and grow beautifully.  Before her declining health, she planted beautiful flowers, shrubbery and flowering trees. Her rose garden flourishes in delightful beauty.  She is preceded in death not only by her parents and husband, John; but, by two sons: Colonel Horace Worthy of Burke, VA and Alvin (Pop) Worthy of the home; also preceded in death by brothers: Levi, Robert, Willie, Alphonso (T-Boy), and Charles (Mark) Boyd; and sisters:  Elizabeth (Lump) Aughtry and Lelia Agnes (Doll) Dawkins.  She is survived by two sons: Otis W. Worthy (Barbara) of Charlotte, NC; Raymond Worthy of the home; four daughters: Dorothy G. Worthy of Stone Mt., GA; Dianne W. Spencer (Mike) of Carlisle, SC; Armanda W. Jeter of the home; and Joyce Ann Worthy-Wilson (Danny) of Stone Mt., GA.; eight grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren; sister-in-law Louella Crosby; two brothers-in-law: Herman (Britches) and wife Lucy, and Rev. Thomas Worthy (Sarah) all of Whitmire, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.  Arrangements are with Community Mortuary, 361 Meansville Road, Union, SC.
