Leslie “Ms. Les” Chastine Garner, daughter of the late Lawrence “Zue” Garner and Gelola Sanders “Etta Jane” Garner, was born August 6, 1946, in Union, South Carolina and departed for her Heavenly Home on June 15, 2021, at Spartanburg Regional Hospital.
At a very young age she accepted Christ as her personal savior and was baptized at Saint Luke Baptist Church. She also began an affinity for music which led to her to becoming the musician for Bethel Baptist Church in Kelton, SC as a teenager. In the years following, she became the musician for the Young Adult Church at Saint Luke Baptist Church and later the Minister of Music serving for over thirty-five years. She was also the “County’s Musician” as she played for every church in Union County lending her voice and piano talents whenever needed. She would play for anyone, anytime, anyplace.
Additionally, she served in many auxiliaries:
Secretary of Saint Luke Baptist Church Missionary, Board Member of Buffalo Community Teen Center, The Pacolet River Missionary, Union County Council on Aging, Sisters on the Move by Faith, His Chosen Few, The Gazebo Prayer Group, and volunteered during last year’s election as a Poll Manager. She was also the Grand Marshall of the Buffalo Parade in 2019.
Leslie was a graduate of Sims High School Class of 1963. She went on to attend Friendship Junior College in Rock Hill, South Carolina where she continued to master her piano skills and served as musician for Friendship’s Choir.
Leslie was a loyal and dedicated worker as she spent more than thirty years at Buffalo and Monarch Mills. She was also skilled in sales as she served as Insurance policy manager for North Carolina Mutual Life Insurance Company.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Gelola and a brother, Robert Lewis.
She leaves precious memories to her son, Patrick Algernon (Diane) of Lukesville, South Carolina, daughter, Stephanie Ursel of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, sister, Linda Faye of Jacksonville, Florida; two granddaughters, Amanda Brooke of Union, South Carolina and Brandi Nicole of McBee, South Carolina; three great-grandchildren, Mariyah Crishon Fleming of Union, South Carolina and Masters Jonathan Dylan and Jace Noah Dixon of McBee, South Carolina: a host of cousins, loved ones and special friends, Bobbi Swann of Baltimore, Maryland, Rosa Glover of Columbia, South Carolina, Annie Pearl Smith of Union, South Carolina, and Ms. Eugenia Foster of Jonesville, South Carolina. The family will receive relatives and friends at the home.
Please wear a mask. Funeral services will be Sunday, June 20, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at Saint Luke Baptist Church, Buffalo, SC. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
