In Loving Memory of Leroy Harrison Wilks, II

Leroy H. Wilks, II, (fondly known as Butch), a devoted veteran who resided at the Dorn VA Community Life Center (CLC), departed this earthly life on June 29, 2023. He was born in Spartanburg, S.C. on May 14, 1952.

Butch was preceded in death by his father Leroy H. Wilks, Sr. beloved mother, Mrs. Barbara J. Fielder, his sister, Jennifer (Jenny) Y. Wilks, and his brother, Derwin G. Fielder.

Butch joined Majority Baptist Church and received Jesus Christ as His Savior at a young age. He graduated from Carver Sr. High School in 1970, where he fostered lifelong friendships.  Known for his distinctive sense of fashion, Butch’s impeccable style made him a standout among his peers. He was honored with the title of "Best Dressed" in high school, a testament to his innate fashion sense and personal flair. Honestly, with his cane he could dance as great as Michael Jackson.

After high school, Butch proudly served his country in the United States Army and afterwards worked for the U.S. Postal Service for many years. Like his mother, his shero was Harriet Tubman, and his hero was Martin Luther King Jr.  

Butch loved his family and is survived by his son, Leroy (Third) H. Wilks, III.  He is also survived by his devoted brother, Timothy J. Fielder and his wife Karen, who stood by his side through his  health challenges;  his cousin, Attorney Joyce Farr Cheeks, who became his devoted caretaker in his later years; his six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends. 

The family would like to extend a special thank you to John Lopez, Leroy's social worker at the CLC. John treated Leroy like family, providing not only professional care but also genuine friendship and support. John's kindness and compassion made a significant difference in Leroy's life, and for that, we are truly grateful.

The family will receive friends at 180 Gordon Street, Spartanburg, SC.
