John Means Obituary

John Earl Means, of Union, SC, widower of the late Janie Mae Moorman Means, and son of the late Wiley Griffin and Mrs. Mildred Means, was born on Tuesday, September 3, 1946, in Lyman, South Carolina. He departed this life on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at his residence.

John was educated in the public schools of Spartanburg County and attended Carver High School in Spartanburg, South Carolina. During his school years, he was actively involved in athletics, participating in football, boxing, and track and field.

A dedicated and hardworking individual, John was employed for many years as a machinist. He rendered over 40 years of faithful service before retiring. In recognition of his commitment and excellence, he received a Certificate of Achievement from Murata of America, Inc., as well as an award from Milliken Plant in Union, South Carolina.

In addition to his beloved wife and parents, John was preceded in death by his daughter, Yvonne Moorman Means “Bonnie” Dawkins; and two brothers, Hugh E. Means and Vance A. Means.

John leaves to cherish his memories: two daughters, Ladie M. Means-Goforth and Marvette A. Woodruff; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Douglas (Annie) Means, Sr.; one sister, Annie Means Lee; one brother-in-law, Jesse James “P.I.” (Geneva) Moorman; sisters-in-law, Geneva Joiner and Evangelist Queen (Donald) Stevens; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Community Mortuary Inc., 361 Meansville Road, Union, SC.
