James Clayton Boyce, III, affectionately known as Li’l Jake (and sometimes Big Jake) went to his eternal rest on February 12, 2021. Born July 21, 1986, Li’l Jake was a native of Spartanburg, South Carolina. He was the son of Attorney Hattie Evans Boyce and the late Rev. James C. “Jake” Boyce Jr. He was a 2000 graduate of Dorman High School and in 2012 he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Morris College in Sumter, South Carolina. While attending Morris College, Li’l Jake was a member of the Morris College Gospel Choir where he joyfully sung praises to God with his peers.
Li’l Jake was beloved member of New Life Ministries Church of Spartanburg, Inc., a church founded by his father. He tirelessly served the church in multiple roles such as choir director, usher, and summer camp counselor. Li’l Jake began as a young age singing in his father’s church children’s choirs and later groomed himself into being the church drummer. Li’l Jake loved meeting new people and took great pride in helping others. He actively participated in the church’s Sunday morning breakfast ministry where they fed the body and nourished the mind with the Word of God. Li’l Jake truly loved attending church and singing. He was often heard humming and singing as he strolled through the doors of the church. In his spare time, he took immense pleasure in spending time with his family and his multitude of friends and cheering on his favorite team from day one the Carolina Panthers. Yet, his proudest moment was when he became a Father!
Besides his mother, Li’l Jake leaves behind a fiancé whom he cherished, Johnicka Byrd; his beloved son, Jaceyon Boyce; two brothers, Jarrod C. Boyce, Jarrel C. (Sonni) Boyce of Washington D.C.; five aunts, Arthine Frazier (Michael Lipscomb), Mary B. (Rev. Michael) Patterson, Paula (Fred) Burks Georgia, Valerie B. Perry, and Linda B. Surratt; six uncles, Eddie Evans of the home, Lionel (Linda) Boyce, Roy (Cindy) Evans, Willie B. Surratt, Raymond Harrell of Indianapolis, and Clarence (Hattie) Griffin; two nephews, Jarrel C. Boyce, Jr. and Blake C. Boyce of Washington D. C. along with a host of close cousins.
