Helen Moore Obituary

On the 20th day of August 1939 in Savannah, Georgia, the Lord blessed Lillie Mae and Chappell Howard with a beautiful daughter, and they named her Helen Marie Howard.  The meaning of the name Helen is "torch" or "light" and is associated with the phrase "the face that launched a thousand ships” Helen used that torch as a guiding light for the life she lived and embodied commitment and service to family, faith and community every step of the way.  When the Lord saw that Helens, work was done, he called her home in the quiet of the morning before the rising of the sun on the 26th day of May 2024.  "The master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant!  You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things.  Come and share your master's happiness’ Matthew 25:21.

Helen received her education in the public schools of Savannah.  She graduated from Alfred E. Beach High School in 1956 and went on to complete her education in nursing receiving her LPN license in 1958. In 1959 Helen was united in holy matrimony with Willie James Moore, Jr.  To this union four children were born - Willie James Moore III, LaVon, Stephanie and Darryl.  After working in various areas of nursing she knew that public health nursing was her calling.  On September 1, 2001, after 30 years and 4 months working with the Chatham County Health Department she retired from nursing.

For so many, Helen was a pillar of strength.   Whether it was specific causes or organizations she was involved in, being a dear friend, or lending a helping hand, her dedication was unwavering. For many years she raised her 4 children on her own and still found the time and energy to help.  She had a gift for making everyone feel like they belonged and used travel and other gatherings to join families, friends, and community. There was always a group of souls in her midst, so it was never a burden or a difficult task because once everyone gathered, they felt the love and supported each other.   It really does take a village to raise a family and hold a community together, and she held that torch high leading every step of the way.

Helen was preceded in death by her mother Lillie Mae Carr, brothers Harold Howard and James Carr, sisters Cleo Gilbert and Sarah English and granddaughter Dominique Moore.  She leaves precious memories to her brother John Carr and her sister Lillie Bell Moore as well as her four children Willie Moore, LaVon and her husband Andrew, Stephanie and her husband William and Darryl and his wife Monica and many nieces and nephews.  Her eight grandchildren Tanisha, Kendra, William, Dania, Darryl II, Jada, Brittany and Brandon and her five great grandchildren Mallorie, Daisy, Anastacia, Dhalia and Darryl III will miss Grandma dearly but had the blessing of knowing her and spending time with her.

Dear mother, may you rest in peace now.  Your light may have dimmed here on Earth, but it will continue to shine within all our hearts.
