In Loving Memory of Goldie Stevens
June 16, 1958 – June 15, 2024
Goldie Stevens, 65, of Spartanburg, South Carolina, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2024. Born on June 16, 1958, in Union, South Carolina, he was the cherished son of the late Effie Mayfield Stevens and the late Harry Dawkins.
At an early age, Goldie realized his need for a savior and became a follower of Christ. He was baptized at Paradise African Methodist Episcopal Church in Union, South Carolina, where his faith continued to grow and shine through his actions and love for his family.
Goldie leaves behind his devoted wife of forty-three years, Jermelia Lawrence Stevens. He is also survived by his sons, Rayford Horne (Sarah) of Rockmart, Georgia, and Roderick Eugene Horne (Antasia) of Spartanburg, South Carolina. His legacy lives on through his grandchildren, Steven-Lawrence Shyrod Horne of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Isabella Rayah-Grace Horne of Rockmart, Georgia. He is also survived by his sister, Mabel Stevens Fuller (Robert) of Union, South Carolina; sister-in-law, Thelia Stevens; and a special nephew, Donald Lewis Stevens (Queen), who was like a brother to him. Additionally, he leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, all of whom cherished him deeply.
Goldie and Jermelia’s friend, John Thomas, provided unwavering support throughout Goldie’s illness, offering emotional guidance and companionship.
Goldie’s parents, along with his brothers, Herbert Dawkins, Benjamin Thompson, Leroy Stevens, Jr., and, Ricky Stevens; and his sisters Wilscena Stevens Comer, and Inez Stevens Goode (James) will greet him into eternity.
Goldie was a proud alumnus of Union High School, graduating with the Bicentennial Class of 1976. After high school, he briefly lived in Canton, Ohio, before returning to South Carolina, settling in Spartanburg. It was at Mayfair Mills in 1980 that he met the love of his life, Jermelia, thanks to the introduction from his good friend Kenny Watts, to whom Goldie was eternally grateful. Goldie and Jermelia were married on November 23, 1980, in Spartanburg, enjoying forty-three years of affectionate matrimony.
After his time at Mayfair, Goldie worked at Tezza Tile Company, where he honed his skills in tile laying. His exquisite craftsmanship can be seen in numerous businesses and homes throughout Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia. Upon retirement, Goldie and partner Gentry White started their own tiling company, contributing beautiful and functional tile creations across in the area.
Goldie was known for his impeccable style and enjoyed dressing to impress, often stepping out with Jermelia in perfectly coordinated outfits. He instilled the importance of appearance in his sons and grandchildren, teaching them to always present their best selves.
Goldie a whiz in the kitchen as well as on the grill. Family and friends would come from miles around just to get a taste of his delectable dishes. He loved nothing better than to throw some steaks, chicken, and burgers on the grill, coerce Jermelia into making her world-famous potato salad, load a cooler with refreshing drinks, turn up the stereo with some Zapp and Roger, and invite his loved ones over for an impromptu party!
Goldie was an avid football fan, and shamelessly cheered on his favorite team, the Kansas City Chiefs. Goldie was a Chiefs fan before being a Chiefs fan was cool. He boldly supported his team through the valleys as well as their stratospheric peaks.
He was also a member of the local Masonic Lodge, having joined the Prince Hall Freemasonry in the early 2000s.
Goldie’s love for the great outdoors was evident in his favorite pastimes: fishing and gardening. Whether enjoying quiet fishing trips with Jermelia or more lively outings with friends and family, he found joy in nature. His garden provided fresh vegetables for loved ones throughout the summer and fall.
Known for his big, loud, and loving personality, Goldie made everyone feel welcome. He had the unique ability to turn strangers into friends. He valued his loved ones deeply. We feel profoundly blessed to be counted among those who Goldie adored. Though his absence leaves a significant void, his memories, teachings, and stories continue to enrich our lives. Until we meet again.
