Gladys Ruth Johnson Mars ”Aunt Buck” was born on January 31st, 1935 in Union, SC and was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Allen and Leander D. Johnson. She departed this life on Saturday, November 27th, 2021 at the National Health Care Center in Clinton, SC. She was a devoted wife of the late Matthew “Shorty” Mars.
Mrs. Gladys received her education from the Union County Public School System, and was a graduate of Sims Jr. High School. She accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age and became a member of New Hope AME Zion Church where she served as a Deaconess, Stewardess Board, Usher Board, Intercessory Prayer Team, Women’s Aide Society, and Senior Choir.
Sis. Gladys was employed by the State of SC for over 30 years and retired from Whitten Center in Clinton, SC.
She was preceded in death by her son, Charles Benard Jeter, daughters, Morris Ann Jeter and Victoria Elizabeth Jeter Suber, five brothers, and eleven sisters.
She leaves to cherish loving memories: two daughters, Gloria O. Jeter-Jones (Richard) of Waynesboro, GA and Jeanelro Jeter-Rice (Booker T.) of Union, SC; four sons, Cassius Clay Jeter (Jackie) of Roebuck, SC, Robert Earl Jeter Jr., Floyd Monroe Jeter (Laurie), and Roy Ellis Jeter all of Union, SC; one step-son, James M. Mars of Columbia, SC, one step-daughter Ms. Myra Mars of Elgin, SC, one sister, Sallie Ferguson of Detroit, Michigan, one sister-in-law, Eliza Long of Newberry SC, nineteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, one great-great grand-daughter, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. The family is at 702 N. Pinckney Street, Union, SC. Arrangements are with Community Mortuary, Inc. 361 Meansville Road, Union, SC.
