Dorothy Jean Rice Gist, 88, of Union, SC made her transition Friday morning, October 21, 2022, in Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home surrounded by her loving and devoted family. A native of Union County, SC, she was the wife of Oscar R. Gist, Sr. and the daughter of the late Jasper Perry Rice and Lizzie Farr Rice.
Our Beloved was a faithful member of McBeth Baptist Church where she served as a deaconess, a member of the finance committee and a past member of the choir and president of the missionary ministry.
After high school, she attended Allen University and was able to complete all requirements for graduation in three years. She later received her Master of Education Degree from North Carolina A&T University in Greensboro, North Carolina.
After graduating from Allen, Mrs. Gist taught at Cohen Street School and later retired from Monarch Elementary School after 33 years of service. Because of her love for children, she chose to serve as a substitute teacher at Monarch for many years.
Through the years Dorothy participated in numerous service organizations. She was the troop leader for the Girl Scouts at Monarch Elementary School and was a tutor for We Care organization, where she tutored and mentored children at the recreation center on Horseshoe Circle. She was a member of the Foster Care Review Board and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She was preceded in death by one son, Dr. Darryl Wayne Gist; one grandson, Channing Gist, brothers, Jasper Rice, Edgar Rice, Roland Rice, Cornell Rice, David Rice, James Rice and sisters, Madora Rice, Louise Pearson, Lena R. Love, Wilhelmina Ferguson, and Evelyn Walker.
Left to cherish many fond and loving memories are her husband, Oscar R. Gist, Sr. of the home; one son, Oscar R. Gist, Jr., (Vonnie) of Gaffney, SC; two daughters, Kimberly Gist Jackson (Gary) of Inman, SC and Paulia Gist McClain (Ronald) of Boiling Springs, SC; one granddaughter, Micah Grace Gist; sister-in-law, Mary Gist; a special student who became a part of the family, Ohio Jeter and host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 26, 2022 at McBeth Baptist Church, 105 Lawson Avenue, Union, SC. Interment will follow in the McBeth Baptist Church Cemetery, 1511 Cross Keys Highway. The family will receive friends at the home.
