Christopher Hill Obituary

Christopher Alan Hill was born on March 20, 1959, in Valhalla, New York, to Cornell Rodgers and Alice “Polly” Hill. An only child, Chris was raised in the loving extended family home of Ralph and Ruth Mitchell alongside several foster siblings, including Sarah Rivera of Missouri, and Bobby and Richard Mitchell, both of whom preceded him in death.

Growing up in a nurturing Christian environment, Chris developed a deep love for the Lord and was baptized into the Seventh-day Adventist Church. His faith became the foundation upon which he built a life of service, compassion, and dedication to others.

Chris attended the Ossining Public School System, progressing from elementary school through high school. Following graduation, he continued his education at Oakwood College in Huntsville, Alabama, where he discovered his passion for teaching. He later earned a master’s degree in education from Coppin State College. During his years in New York, Chris entered marriage and began building a life centered around faith, learning, and community.

In 1989, seeking greater opportunities, Chris relocated to the Washington Metropolitan area. In 2000, he was married at Breath of Life Church in Fort Washington, Maryland. Throughout his years in the Washington area, Chris faithfully attended and served numerous congregations, including Capitol Hill, New Life, Restoration Praise Church, Columbia, and Reid Temple.

A devoted church worker, Chris, served in a variety of ministries and auxiliaries, including the Usher Board, Social Recreation Ministry, Hospitality Ministry, Pathfinder support programs, and the Suddenly Single Ministry. His warm, vibrant personality and signature “big hugs” made him a cherished presence wherever he went. Chris loved life, loved people, loved music, and loved the church. Whenever the church doors were open on Saturday or Sunday, Chris could be found faithfully serving. He truly embodied the spirit of Martha—always working, always helping, and always ensuring that others felt welcomed and cared for.

Chris also possessed a love for travel and adventure. In his pursuit of experiencing the world, he journeyed to many destinations, including China, England, Singapore, Dubai, Turkey, the Dominican Republic, Panama, and France, as well as numerous cities throughout the United States. These experiences broadened his perspective and reflected his appreciation for different cultures and people.

On May 26, 2026, a tragic event unfolded as Chris peacefully passed away, returning the breath of life to his Creator. Though his physical presence is no longer with us, the impact of his life continues to resonate in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. His kindness, faithfulness, generosity, and unwavering commitment to serving others leave a lasting legacy.

Left to cherish his precious memory are his beloved cousins, Sharon Hill Duncan of South Carolina and Kareema Shabazz of New York; his foster sister, Sarah Rivera; special friends Betty and Norman Mitchell, Terry and O.B. Taylor, Michael Wright, and Robin Moss; along with a host of other relatives, church family members, and dear friends.

Chris will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever treasured.
