Betty Rose (Richard) Sims

Betty Rose Richard Sims, a resident of Union, SC, departed this life on August 14, 2022, at the age of 92 years old surrounded by her eldest daughter and oldest two granddaughters in Spartanburg, SC. 

 Betty was born on August 28, 1929, in Union, SC to Rosa and Walter Richard.  She was predeceased by her parents and each of her siblings.  Her siblings included, Josephine ‘Jo’ Moody, Robert ‘Bob’ Richard, Anne Louise ‘Tea’ Richard, Janie Mae Richard, Charles ‘Sonny’ Richard, and Henderson ‘Buster’ Richard.

 She was the mother of four children: Dorothy Richard Hunter (Leonard), James Richard (Phoebe), Charles Marion Richards (Hallie) and Jo Ann Richard (Bobby Shell) and mothered five additional children; Jacqueline Smith (Gillom), Jeffrey Richard (Valerie), three of which preceded her in death; Gloria McBeth (Joe), Bessie Mae Richard and Grace ‘Tudy’ Clayton (George).

 Betty was “Granny” to Tracy Hunter Lyons (Tony), Craig Richard (Leslie), Timothy Hunter, Yakeisha ‘Keisha’ Richard, Malaika Richard, Wakela Clayton Lytle (Dewayne), Josette ‘Neik’ McBeth, Francis "Spanky" Johnson, Carla Richards, Imani Richard, George Clayton, Jr, Nikki Richards Foster (Eric), Juan ‘Fee Fee’ Savage and Candace Janay Clayton.

 Her great-grandchildren include Brittany Jones, Taquanya ‘Quan’ Jones, Tyson Lyons, Laura Lojko (Alex), Demarcus Morton, Undoland Hunter, Joshua Hunter, Clarke Richard, Robert Richard, Jordan Morman (Rachel), Eriyanna Porter, Everette Porter, Jaiden Gory, Chandler Barron, Delonte Richards, Destiny Richards, Zavien Foster, Zauria Foster, Joshua Clayton, London Clayton, Egypt Clayton, Seven Eison, Elijajuan Jeter and Tatyanna Jeter.  Betty also left behind a host of great-great grands, nieces, nephews and was a surrogate mother and grandmother to many in the community. Betty was preceded in death by one grandchild, Charika ‘Tonka’ Richard. To us, she was ‘Granny’; to her, we were ‘her children’. 

 Betty was a member of the St. Paul Baptist Church located in Union, SC.  As a tithing member, she led the Nurses Guild as well as the Mother Board for many years.  After graduating from Sims High School, Betty moved to Washington, DC where she worked for Marriott, Inc. She lived in Washington, DC for several years before moving back to Union to care for her mother.  Once back in Union, SC, Betty became a Nurse’s Assistant at Wallace Thomson Hospital where she remained for over twenty years.
